Review of Micro Masters/Action Heroes
The Age, Melbourne "Artist as Producer In this action-packed show, Adrienne Doig's My Life as a Doll (10 1/12-size dolls of herself in different outfits, commissioned from doll markers found on the Internet) and Charles O'Loughlin's action-painting robot Ultrabot raise questions of the artist as producer. In a clever curatorial decision, you can stand watching O'Loughlin's DVD recording his paintbrush-wielding robot repeatedly approaching and drawing away from the canvas in the production of the painting, or you can appraise the completed work hanging on the opposite wall. That is, you either contemplate the process (with its implicit questions of authorial intention) or the object. Or you hold both in mind and go and stare out the window. Great stuff. Penny Webb" |
